How GSM Affects Woollen Overcoat Performance

The weight of the internal support layer can change how a woollen overcoat feels, moves and holds its shape. This is why manufacturers should not select an interlining simply because a particular GSM worked well for another garment. An overcoat has a larger front panel, heavier outer fabric and greater exposure to repeated wear, so its internal construction needs to be evaluated separately.
A woven fusible interlining is often preferred for this application because its woven structure provides strength across the panel. The appropriate GSM depends on the weight of the wool, the desired silhouette and how firm the finished garment needs to feel. A lighter grade may work with a softer wool blend, while heavier winter fabrics can require stronger support to prevent the front from losing its shape.
Manufacturers should also remember that woven interlining is not selected on GSM alone. Adhesive performance, fabric compatibility and fusing conditions all influence the final result. A test sample can reveal whether the combination produces the right balance of structure and flexibility. The bonded sample should remain smooth, maintain its shape and avoid feeling excessively stiff.
For Delhi manufacturers, getting this balance right before winter production begins is especially important. Once a large batch has been cut and fused, changing the internal construction can become expensive and time-consuming. Testing early provides a much safer way to establish the right specification.
